DESCRIPTION
Student musicians 12 and older are invited to join flutist Ceylon Mitchell and his musician colleagues in a fun and engaging interactive workshop focused on Afro-Latin rhythms. Students need not be percussionists to participate!
Percussion instruments will be provided! Mr. Mitchell says, “We will explore the percussion section instruments and the rhythmic elements that form the groove accompaniment in Cuban and Brazilian music, born from the rich amalgamation of Spanish/Portuguese folk music formulas and African rhythms. This workshop will include live and recorded musical examples, paying homage to famous influential Cuban flutists, including Eduardo “Richard” Egues and Orlando “Maraca” Valle as well as Afro-Brazilian, Pixinguinha. Participants will have the opportunity to maintain ostinato rhythms on percussive instruments (clave, guiro, congas) while the main lead instruments (flute and piano) improvise over these grooves. Older students with instrumental experience will gather and trade measures of improvisations, using simple guidelines, incorporating common rhythmic fragments, motives, and melodic riffs, and eventually venturing into free improvisation.”
A not-to-be-missed opportunity for young musicians to make music with the professionals! Intended for ages 12 to 21, and a range of skill levels. Participants will be limited to 15. Friends and family members of students are welcome to attend and observe. Approximately 90 minutes.
